What is a bioethanol fire?

A bioethanol fire is a real-flame alternative to traditional gas or coal fires. These fires rely on fuel created through fermented vegetables, converting the sugar they use into alcohol. A bioethanol fireplace provides as much real heat from the flame as a regular fireplace, and can burn for an average time of 4-8 hours, dependent on the amount of fuel used and the flame setting. They provide real fire, but without some of the common drawbacks of traditional fuel fires.

Are they safe?

Bioethanol fires are some of the safest types of fires on the market. Ethanol burns at around 98% efficiency, meaning no harsh chemicals or smoke is emitted when burning. A bioethanol fire only produces three substances: heat, water, and such small amounts of Carbon Dioxide that it poses no risk. These forms of fires do not produce the carcinogenic, smoke, or ash associated with traditional fossil fuel or wood fires, and are therefore suitable for use inside and outside of the home. A small risk does come with the handling of flammable fuel, and so it is important to have proper processes in place to avoid any accidents. Ensure you are buying fuel from reputable manufacturers, and keep the fire and the fuel out of reach of small children or pets.

Are bioethanol fires eco-friendly?

The ethanol fuel used in bioethanol fireplaces is completely eco-friendly. The fuel is made from fermented vegetables, whereby the sugar is extracted from the vegetable, similar to the process of making alcoholic drinks, however the substance is then distilled further. Many ethanol manufacturers also work to operate without any additional fossil fuels. Additionally, ethanol burns at 98% efficiency, and so no harmful chemicals are released into the atmosphere when the fireplace is used.

How to operate, and maintain one

A bioethanol fireplace is easy to operate – all you need to do is pour the fuel over the burner box, and light it using a long handled lighter or matches. Within minutes, a cosy real flame will be emitted. Maintaining these fires is also extremely easy, as there is no chimney or flue to maintain and monitor. It is important to keep the fireplace and surrounding area clean of debris, or any spare drops of ethanol fluid, as this can increase the risk of accidents. When filling, or topping up the fireplace with fluid, ensure the fireplace has completely cooled.
